What is the difference between PE-RT and PEX pipes?
PE-RT (Polyethylene of Raised Temperature Resistance) and PEX (Cross-linked Polyethylene) are both types of plastic pipes commonly used in plumbing applications. While they have some similarities, there are important differences between the two:
Composition:
- PE-RT: PE-RT pipes are made of a type of polyethylene that is specifically designed to withstand higher temperatures. They are typically made using a raised temperature resistance resin, which gives them enhanced thermal properties.
- PEX: PEX pipes are made by cross-linking polyethylene molecules using different methods, such as the PEX-A, PEX-B, or PEX-C manufacturing processes. This cross-linking improves the durability and heat resistance of the pipes.
Temperature Resistance:
- PE-RT: PE-RT pipes have a higher temperature resistance compared to standard PEX pipes. They can typically handle continuous hot water temperatures of up to 203°F (95°C).
- PEX: PEX pipes have good temperature resistance but may not be suitable for extremely high-temperature applications. The maximum continuous operating temperature for PEX pipes is usually around 180°F (82°C) but can vary depending on the PEX type.
Flexibility:
- PE-RT: PE-RT pipes are more flexible compared to PEX pipes. Their flexibility allows for easier installation and routing around obstacles.
- PEX: PEX pipes are also flexible but may be slightly less malleable than PE-RT pipes. However, they are still considered highly flexible compared to traditional plumbing materials like copper.
Oxygen Barrier:
- PE-RT: Some PE-RT pipes have an inherent oxygen barrier, which helps prevent the diffusion of oxygen through the pipe walls. This can be beneficial for applications where oxygen ingress may be a concern, such as in hydronic heating systems.
- PEX: PEX pipes do not have an inherent oxygen barrier. If an oxygen barrier is required, it can be achieved by using PEX pipes with an additional layer or coating specifically designed for oxygen diffusion prevention.
Both PE-RT and PEX pipes are suitable for hot and cold water plumbing systems and have good resistance to chemicals and corrosion. The choice between the two depends on specific project requirements, temperature needs, and local plumbing codes.
