EN 15874 Common PPR Pipes Installation Issues & Solutions

Table of Contents

Introduction

PPR pipes are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing due to their corrosion resistance, durability, and leak-proof properties. However, improper installation can lead to leaks, weak joints, and water flow issues, reducing system efficiency.

To ensure a long-lasting and reliable plumbing system, it is essential to understand the most common PPR pipe installation issues and how to prevent them.

PPR Pipe

1. PPR Pipe Inadequate Heat Fusion Welding

Issue

Heat fusion welding is crucial for creating strong, leak-free joints. If the welding temperature is too low, the joint will be weak and prone to failure. On the other hand, excessive heat can deform the pipe, leading to restricted water flow.

Solution

1️⃣ Set the welding machine temperature to 260–270°C (500–518°F).
2️⃣ Heat both the pipe and fitting for the recommended duration based on pipe size.
3️⃣ Insert the pipe without twisting to ensure a uniform connection.
4️⃣ Allow the joint to cool naturally before applying water pressure.

2. Misaligned Joints

Issue

Improper pipe alignment during installation can result in joint stress, increasing the risk of cracks and leaks over time.

Solution

1️⃣ Use pipe alignment tools to ensure straight and even connections.
2️⃣ Allow for thermal expansion and contraction to reduce stress on the joints.
3️⃣ Install PPR elbow fittings instead of bending the pipe forcefully.

3. Poor Pipe Support & Sagging

Issue

PPR pipes require proper support to prevent sagging, which can cause water pooling and joint strain. Without adequate support, the pipes may weaken over time.

Solution

1️⃣ Secure horizontal pipes with brackets every 50–60 cm and vertical pipes every 80–100 cm.
2️⃣ Use expansion loops or flexible joints in long pipe runs to accommodate movement.
3️⃣ Avoid over-tightening brackets, allowing for slight movement due to expansion.

4. Incorrect Pipe Cutting & Preparation

Issue

Uneven or rough pipe edges from improper cutting can cause poor welds and weak connections, increasing the likelihood of leaks.

Solution

1️⃣ Use a sharp PPR pipe cutter to ensure smooth, clean cuts.
2️⃣ Remove any burrs and rough edges before welding.
3️⃣ Mark the insertion depth before welding to ensure a proper fit.

5. Contaminated Welding Surface

Issue

Dirt, moisture, or oil on the pipe or fitting before welding can weaken the fusion bond, resulting in joint failure.

Solution

1️⃣ Keep pipes and fittings dry and free of debris before welding.
2️⃣ Store PPR pipes in a clean, dust-free area before installation.
3️⃣ Avoid touching heated surfaces to prevent contamination.

6. Over-Tightening of Threaded Connections

Issue

Over-tightening PPR threaded fittings can crack the fitting or damage the seal, leading to leaks.

Solution

1️⃣ Hand-tighten PPR threaded fittings, then use a wrench for a quarter-turn adjustment.
2️⃣ Apply PTFE tape to threaded joints for a better seal.
3️⃣ Avoid using metal tools directly on PPR fittings to prevent damage.

7. Skipping Pressure Testing

Issue

Failing to conduct a pressure test after installation may leave leaks undetected, leading to costly repairs later.

Solution

1️⃣ Perform a hydrostatic pressure test before covering pipes.
2️⃣ Maintain a test pressure of 1.5 times the working pressure for at least 30 minutes.
3️⃣ Inspect all joints for pressure drops or visible leaks.

Conclusion

Proper PPR pipe installation ensures long-term durability, leak-free performance, and efficient water flow. By following best practices for heat fusion welding, alignment, support, and pressure testing, installers can prevent common issues and maximize the lifespan of PPR plumbing systems.
