Introduction to Brass in Drinking Water
Brass pipe fittings have been used in plumbing for centuries. Their strength and durability are well known. However, traditional brass contains lead. Lead can leach into drinking water. This poses a serious health risk. Modern regulations have changed the industry significantly.
Modern Lead-Free Standards
Today, lead-free brass pipe fittings are mandatory for drinking water. The U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act defines “lead-free” as less than 0.25% lead content. California’s AB 1953 set this standard earlier. Vermont and Maryland followed. Federal law aligned with these states in 2011.
NSF/ANSI 61 Certification Explained
The key certification for drinking water is NSF/ANSI 61. This standard tests for leaching of 14 regulated metals. These include lead, arsenic, and chromium. Brass pipe fittings with this certification are proven safe. The certification applies to the water contact material itself.
NSF/ANSI 372 for Lead Content
NSF/ANSI 372 specifically addresses lead content. It verifies that brass contains less than 0.25% lead. Brass pipe fittings with both NSF 61 and 372 certifications meet all requirements. This dual certification is the industry gold standard.

Expanded NSF Acceptable Materials List
In 2024, NSF/ANSI 61 added seven brass alloys to Annex N-2. This is the “Acceptable Materials” list for drinking water components. Manufacturers can now use these alloys without repeated testing. This was the first such addition in over 20 years.
DZR Brass: An Extra Layer of Protection
Dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass offers additional corrosion protection. This alloy prevents zinc from leaching out of the brass. DZR brass pipe fittings are specifically designed for potable water. They resist cracking and fungal growth in water systems.
WRAS Approval for International Use
In the UK and many other countries, you need WRAS approval. WRAS-approved brass pipe fittings are certified for potable water up to 85°C. This standard ensures materials do not cause waste or contamination. It is recognized globally for drinking water safety.
Low Lead Brass (Pb<0.1%) for Food Applications
Some brass pipe fittings use even stricter standards. For food and beverage applications, lead content can be below 0.1%. These fittings are certified NSF/ANSI 169 for contact with water, tea, and coffee. They also meet NSF/ANSI 372 requirements.
Recyclability and Environmental Benefits
Lead-free brass pipe fittings are 100% recyclable. They typically contain close to 100% recycled content. This makes them an environmentally sustainable choice. DZR alloys are also fully recyclable without special segregation.
Research Confirms Performance
Scientific studies confirm the safety of non-leaded brass. A Water Research Foundation project tested four non-leaded brasses. All four fulfilled hygienic requirements for drinking water. Their corrosion resistance was equivalent to traditional red brass.
Dezincification Testing Results
The same study tested dezincification resistance. In short-term tests, no relevant dezincification was detected. For long-term performance, three of four alloys performed equal or better than reference brass. This confirms DZR properties are effective.
Special Considerations for Aggressive Water
For waters with high dezincification potential, you need extra caution. Low alkalinity, high chloride, or high sulfate waters are risk factors. In these conditions, manufacturers recommend long-term testing. This ensures the specific brass alloy performs adequately.
Brass pipe fittings are suitable for drinking water systems when properly certified. Look for NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 markings. Choose DZR brass for additional corrosion resistance. WRAS approval is recognized internationally. Modern lead-free alloys meet all health and safety requirements. For aggressive water conditions, consult manufacturers for specific performance data. With correct selection, brass fittings provide safe, durable drinking water connections for decades.
