Temperature Tolerance of Brass
Brass is a copper-zinc alloy with good heat resistance. Brass pipe fittings can handle high temperatures without softening. The material maintains its strength up to 400°F (204°C). However, the internal seals (if any) have lower limits. For solid brass fittings without seals, the metal itself performs well.
Standard Hot Water Temperature Ranges
Residential hot water systems operate at 120-140°F (49-60°C). Commercial systems may reach 160-180°F (71-82°C). Brass pipe fittings easily handle these temperatures. The material does not degrade or lose strength. This makes brass a reliable choice for hot water distribution.
Pressure Derating at Elevated Temperatures
Pressure ratings decrease as temperature rises. A brass pipe fitting rated for 200 psi at 100°F may handle less at 180°F. For Class 125 brass fittings, the 200 psi WOG rating applies only below 150°F. Above this temperature, consult manufacturer derating charts.
Thermal Expansion Considerations
Brass expands when heated, like all metals. Brass pipe fittings expand at about 0.000011 inches per inch per degree F. This is less than plastic but more than steel. For long hot water runs, allow for expansion. Use expansion loops or offsets as needed.
Dezincification Risk with Hot Water
Hot water accelerates dezincification corrosion. This is the leaching of zinc from the brass alloy. Brass pipe fittings with high zinc content are vulnerable. Standard yellow brass (33% zinc) can fail over time. When dealing with hot water, DZR (dezincification-resistant) brass is the solution.

DZR Brass for Hot Water Systems
DZR brass pipe fittings contain arsenic or other inhibitors. This prevents zinc from leaching out of the alloy. DZR brass is specifically formulated for hot water and aggressive water. It is required by many building codes for hot water applications. Look for “DZR” or “CR” markings.
Use in Water Heaters and Boilers
Brass pipe fittings are standard on water heater connections. They connect the cold inlet and hot outlet pipes. They are also used on boiler systems for heating. The fittings handle the temperature cycling without cracking. Brass compression fittings are common for these connections.
Performance in Hot Water Recirculation Systems
Recirculation systems keep hot water constantly moving. This exposes fittings to continuous high temperature. Brass pipe fittings perform well in these systems. However, dezincification can be accelerated. DZR brass is strongly recommended for recirculation lines.
Lead-Free Requirements for Hot Potable Water
Hot water can leach more lead from brass than cold water. Lead-free brass pipe fittings are essential for drinking water. The standard is less than 0.25% lead content. NSF/ANSI 61 certification ensures compliance. This applies regardless of water temperature.
WRAS Approval for Hot Water (85°C)
WRAS-approved brass pipe fittings are certified for hot water. The approval typically covers temperatures up to 85°C (185°F). This covers most domestic and commercial hot water systems. The certification also requires dezincification resistance.
Examples of Hot Water Applications
Brass pipe fittings are used throughout hot water systems. These fittings connect water heaters to distribution pipes. They also serve as shut-off valves at fixtures. Such components join sections of copper or PEX tubing. In addition, they are used in radiant floor heating manifolds. Each application benefits from brass’s durability.
Summary and Best Practices
Brass pipe fittings are fully suitable for hot water applications. Use DZR brass to prevent dezincification. Always use lead-free brass for potable hot water. Follow pressure derating at high temperatures. Allow for thermal expansion in long runs. With proper selection, brass fittings provide decades of reliable hot water service.
